Eleven grandparent households, ten toys, two weeks of visits: the presents that get you a second thank-you in January, not a polite nod on the 25th.

If you are a grandparent, you know the look. The paper comes off, your grandchild says “thank you, Grandma” because a parent is staring at them, and ninety seconds later they are back inside the cardboard box the other present came in. I have given that gift. Twice. The real prize isn’t the thank-you on the 25th. It is the second thank-you: the unprompted call three weeks later that starts with “Grandpa, I beat level forty.”

Most toys never earn that call because they are built to win the unboxing and nothing after it. Five minutes of lights, a flat battery by New Year’s, a piece under the sofa. And grandparents have a particular problem: we don’t live there. We can’t nudge the thing back into rotation on a Tuesday. The gift has to pull its own weight.

So this fall I did it properly. At the end of September I sent ten toys to eleven grandparent households across the US, from Minneapolis to Savannah to my own kitchen in Tucson, with grandkids aged one to twelve. Each house got three or four toys and one instruction: on every visit, write down whether the child reached for it without being asked. Two weeks later the tallies came back. The TurboRace Interactive Game Set was picked up on every single visit in nine of the eleven homes. Nothing else came close.

One honest word before you scroll. The toys that make a list like this are the ones that run thin in December. Everything here ships within 24 hours, but I can’t promise you a delivery date in the last week before Christmas, and neither can anyone else. Order in November and you get to feel smug. Order on the 20th and you get to feel nervous.

1. TurboRace Interactive Game Set

The gift that beat the tablet in nine of eleven homes

Every grandparent knows the sting of a gift that loses to a tablet by lunchtime. In nine of our eleven homes, this was the toy that won. A real steering wheel, a gear shift that clicks and speed controls, no screen anywhere: 200 challenges across Racing and Spaceship Mode, plus a double-tap nitro boost that earned a cheer every time. It recharges by cable, so no batteries, and the sound effects are lively without taking over the room. Ages 3 and up, in green or black. Start with the TurboRace Interactive Game Set.

“My six-year-old handed me the wheel and said “Grandpa, your turn.” Two weeks later I’m on level 31 and he’s on 58.”— Walt R., tester household #4, Minneapolis MN

2. STEM Circuit Puzzle Board

The gift that makes the fan spin and the planets appear

For the grandchild who takes the remote apart. Snap the blocks in place, close the circuit, and something real happens: the fan spins, the astronaut lights up, the projector throws planets across the ceiling. All 50 puzzles are built into the board, so there are no cards to lose between your house and theirs, and it is USB rechargeable with no app and no Wi-Fi. It’s for ages 3 and up with a grown-up alongside, which is rather the point. Our Savannah testers got through puzzles 1 to 14 on one rainy Sunday. Give a first lesson in electricity with the STEM Circuit Puzzle Board.

👶 Best for: ages 3 and up, with a grown-up

Reader tipDim the lamps for the projector puzzles and aim at the ceiling from the couch. In a bright room the planets are faint.

3. Magnetic Gravity-Defying Electric Track Car

The gift that makes them shout “look!”

The toy that makes a four-year-old shout “look!” at the exact moment the car keeps going where gravity says it shouldn’t. Kids build their own course from magnetic building blocks, so the track is different every visit, and the car runs on motion-sensing control rather than a fiddly remote. It is metal, not flimsy plastic, and wipes clean with a damp cloth. Made for ages 4 to 6, in Rainbow or Pink. If there are two grandkids, the MAX set with two trains ends the argument before it starts. Build it together with the Magnetic Gravity-Defying Track Car.

4. ChatGPT Powered STEM Learning Robot

The gift that answers the hundredth question of the day

The showstopper of the list, and the one for the grandchild who asks a hundred questions a day and wants every one answered. The robot talks back, runs interactive learning apps, karaoke with a microphone and dance routines, and is rated ages 6 and up. The honest caveat: it needs Wi-Fi, so set it up at their house or get the password before Christmas Eve. Blue or pink, as a solo bot or a pair for siblings who share nothing. “She told the robot about her spelling test before she told me. I wasn’t offended. I was listening from the kitchen.”— Carol D., tester household #7, Raleigh NC

5. Tiny Biker Anti-Tip Motorcycle

The gift that says “I believe in you” to a one-year-old

For the youngest on your list, the one you’ve been told is “too little for real toys.” The Tiny Biker is made for ages 1 to 6, with an anti-tip three-wheel design and a seat low enough that feet stay on the floor. No pedals: sit, push, go. The silent EVA wheels left no marks on Ruth’s oak floors in Columbus, which she checked daily. It carries up to 66 lb, so most kids ride it for years, and it comes in Knight Black, Moss Green or Mocha Brown, with a youth helmet option. Give a first set of wheels with the Tiny Biker Motorcycle.

6. Bluetooth BeatBoxer Wall Trainer

The gift that burns off the cookies before dinner

For the grandchild who bounces off the walls: give them a wall. The BeatBoxer sticks to any smooth wall with suction cups and sponge adhesive, no drilling, so it goes up in the spare room and comes down when they leave. Targets light up, kids punch them, a score climbs. Three speed levels keep a five-year-old and a nine-year-old both honest, and you connect your own playlist over Bluetooth; Motown tested well. Volume is adjustable, which the grandparents noticed before the kids did. Ages 5 and up; the Large comes with free gloves. Burn off the cookies with the Bluetooth BeatBoxer Wall Trainer.

👶 Best for: ages 5 and up

7. STEM SuperPad Shockproof Learning Tablet

The screen gift that calls Grandma back

The screen gift you can give with a clear conscience. A 7-inch shatter-safe screen in a shockproof astronaut case with a handle, preloaded with math, letters, music, animals, colors, shapes and puzzles for ages 2 to 6, and a parental panel for time limits and app approval. Most apps work offline; Wi-Fi is only for setup, downloads and video chats, and for a grandparent two states away, video chat is the feature. A stylus and a sticker sheet are in the box. Blue, light blue or pink. Stay in the picture with the STEM SuperPad Learning Tablet.

8. Complete Karaoke Microphone Set with LED Stand

The gift that turns the living room into a stage

Remember singing into a hairbrush? This is that, with a stand, a light show and an audience button. A real microphone on an LED stand, an applause button for when the family isn’t clapping hard enough, and it pairs with any Bluetooth phone for backing tracks. The volume adjusts, which matters at 7am on Christmas morning. Ages 3 and up, pink or blue. It comes with one mic or two; get the Double, because somebody will want to duet with Grandma. Take the stage with the Complete Karaoke Microphone Set.

“The applause button was pressed, by my count, four hundred times in one afternoon. I regret nothing.”— Doris M., tester household #9, Savannah GA

9. Giant Jelly Balloon Ball

The gift that lives at Grandma’s house all year

The sleeper hit of the test and the easiest to wrap: it ships flat. Inflated it is 26 to 28 inches of wobbling, see-through, tear-resistant TPR you can kick, throw, jump on and sit on, and you get two in the box. Recommended for ages 4 and up. In December it’s a hallway toy; come spring it moves to the yard, and it deflates for the closet in between, which makes it the toy that lives at Grandma’s house. The bundle adds a pump (6 AA batteries, not included) and a five-patch kit. Blue, pink, green or yellow. Bounce into the Giant Jelly Balloon Ball.

👶 Best for: ages 4 and up

Reader tipGet the version with the pump. Our Phoenix testers tried inflating it by mouth. Once.

10. RC Paper Airplane

The gift you build together and fly together

If I could wrap only one thing for a seven-year-old with a patient grandpa, this would be it. You fold the plane yourselves from a sheet of A4 paper, clip on the power module and landing gear, and fly it with the 2.4GHz remote: no app, no Wi-Fi. It is USB rechargeable and rated ages 7 and up, and the module works with different fold designs, so the second afternoon is about engineering, not just flying. It is the simplest gift on this list and earned the most phone calls. Fold one together with the RC Paper Airplane.

Ships within 24 hours

The best gift isn’t the toy. It’s the second phone call.

Your grandchildren will not remember every parcel you ever sent. They will remember the one that felt like you knew them: the racer for the kid who narrates car chases, the circuit board for the one who unscrews things, the microphone for the one who performs at dinner.

Every toy here has already earned that moment in a tester’s living room this fall. Pick the one that made you picture a particular face, and you have done the hard part.

Then don’t sit on it. These ten are the first to go thin every December, and the best Christmas mornings begin with a box that has been in the closet for a fortnight.

Questions grandparents asked me

Which one for which age?

Each card shows the real age range in the pill. Under three: the Tiny Biker (ages 1 to 6) or the SuperPad (ages 2 to 6). Three to five: the TurboRace, Circuit Board, karaoke set and Jelly Ball (4+). Four to six: the magnetic track car. Six and up: the robot, and the BeatBoxer from five. The RC Paper Airplane is for seven and up with a grown-up at the controls to start.

Do I need to pack batteries?

Almost nothing here takes batteries. The TurboRace, Circuit Board, robot, SuperPad and RC Paper Airplane all recharge by cable and the cable is in the box. The one exception is the optional pump in the Jelly Ball bundle, which takes 6 AA batteries, not included.

Which ones need Wi-Fi?

The robot does: it connects to Wi-Fi to run its apps, so set it up at the grandchild’s house. The SuperPad only needs Wi-Fi for setup, downloads and video calls; its learning apps work offline. The BeatBoxer and karaoke set use Bluetooth from your phone for music. Everything else is switch-on-and-play.

Will it arrive before Christmas?

Orders ship within 24 hours. I can’t promise a delivery date, and I won’t pretend to; carriers in late December are a lottery. If you want it under the tree without worry, order in November or the first days of December.

What if I pick the wrong one?

Returns and exchanges are free. Keep the box and the packing slip. In our test, the most common swap was a parent asking for the Double Mic instead of the Single, so if there are two kids in the house, start there.

P.S. Everything on this list ships within 24 hours, and returns and exchanges are free. Keep the boxes until New Year’s; the kids will swap, and so will the parents.
